We achieve this by incorporating lifts in the scaffold structure as the build progresses, usually at 1.5 metre intervals. Another important aspect is the calculation of how much weight the scaffolding will need to bear. Obviously, a house extension involves the use of bricks and cement and these can place a great strain on a platform board. Extension scaffolds are generally designed to take a working load of 1.5 – 2 kn per square metre but anything greater than this will require a solution such as a loading bay. A normal loading bay of 4 metres x 2 metres can carry an imposed load of 3 kn per square metre.  


It’s common for internal scaffolding to be required to build and finish the internal walls of the house extension. It’s also sometimes necessary for edge protection to be supplied when joists and floor areas are being built. People often assume that the scaffolding requirements on a house extension are very basic, simply because it is a smaller project than an office or supermarket construction, but there are a variety of factors to consider. Although these take a little longer to devise at the start, they actually save time throughout the project as everyone know exactly what kind of scaffolding is needed at which times.

On commercial projects, the buildings are often empty, meaning that there’s no need to consider the safety of any people inside. On domestic projects, this obviously isn’t the case. The family who live there want to be able to use as much of their home as possible and be disrupted as little as possible.
